If you have documents, a filing that doesn't add up, or know something about an Australian company, listed or private, that belongs in the public record, get in touch.

Ordinary email is not end-to-end encrypted.

What helps

• Documents over descriptions. A board paper, contract, email or internal report is worth more than a summary of one.
• Specifics. Entity names, ASX codes, dates, dollar figures and where the relevant filing can be found.
• How you know. Your connection to the information, so it can be weighed properly.

Protect yourself

• Don't use a work email account, work device or work network.
• Consider a separate personal email account created for the purpose.
• Remove metadata from files where you can. Photos carry metadata too, including location, so take a screenshot or strip it before sending. Check that nothing in the frame identifies you.
• Only send material you have legitimate access to. Don't access systems, files or accounts you're not authorised to use.

A disclosure to a journalist is not automatically a protected disclosure under the whistleblower provisions of the Corporations Act 2001. In most cases protection depends on first reporting to the company or a regulator such as ASIC. If statutory protection matters to you, get independent legal advice before you send anything.

What happens next

Everything sent is read, usually more than once. Not every tip becomes a story, and the ones that do tend to take weeks, because every figure is traced to a document before anything is published. A tip the paperwork won't carry goes no further.

If the paperwork carries it, the company concerned may get a right of reply, published in full alongside the piece. If it cannot, nothing is published, and you will at least know that somebody read the documents properly. That is more than most filings get.
